This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Growing up on a small farm in Iowa, Roger Johnson developed a love of landscape and the old houses he saw. At age 10, he began painting these scenes, and went on to earn an MFA from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa after studying art at Central College in Pella. He then spent several years in Europe studying the Old Masters and took classes in the US including with Richard Schmid. He moved to Colorado and paints small-historic mountain villages and adobes in New Mexico.

Biography from Manitou Galleries:
Capturing the light of early morning or late afternoon in his architectural landscape paintings is the passion of Colorado artist Roger Hayden Johnson. Originally inspired at the age of ten by the work of Vincent Van Gogh, Johnson paints with a vibrant color palette in order to capture a unique moment in time. Roger Hayden Johnson paints indigenous architecture and waterscapes, including old farmhouses and country chapels throughout the Southwest and Europe.

Roger Hayden Johnson taught himself to paint the landscapes near the small Iowa farm where he grew up. He later studied art at Central College in Pella, Iowa, and earned a Master’s degree in art and art history at the University of Northern Iowa and a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting at Drake University in Des Moines. After having lived in Paris and Munich, Johnson moved with his family to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1984. He began traveling into the mountains and valleys of northern New Mexico, where he fell in love with the earth-colored walls of old adobe buildings. With its small Spanish speaking communities clustered around churches, the area reminded him of Europe. And when the sun slanted low across these solid, age-graced structures, he was hooked.

Roger Hayden Johnson's works are found in private and museum collections all over the world.
