Born in Ghent, Belgium Theo van Rysselberghe received his artistic training at the Academy of Ghent under Theo Caneel, and from 1879 on, at the Academy of Brussels under the directorship of Jean-Francois Portaels. At the young age of eighteen, he showed two portraits at the Salon of Ghent, and in 1881, exhibited for the first time at the Salon in Brussels.
van Rysselberghe was one of the co-founders of the Belgian artistic circle Les XX, a group of young radical artists united (showing 500 of 1880 characters). |
