Born in Antwerp in 1929, Helsmoortel studied classical art in Europe with the patronage of Queen Elizabeth of Belgium.
He arrived in the United States in 1959 after having exhibited his
colossal sculpture (30 ft x 100 ft) at the 1958 Brussels World’s
Fair. Some of his inspiration comes from a time when he lived
with Pablo Casals.
His works are on display in Europe and North America, for example: 1958
World’s Fair entrance, Pavilion du Gaz, Brussels, Belgium, (showing 500 of 1115 characters). |
