This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Cheri Samba (b. 1956)

Cheri Samba was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo in n Kinto M'Vuila on December 30, 1956.

At sixteen, in 1972, Samba left his village to go to the capital of Kinshasa to look for work as a sign painter.  In 1975, he opened his own studio and became the illustrator at the magazine, Bilenge Info.  Samba combined his techniques and experiences as a billboard and comic strip artist to create his works on sack clothing.  Through these works, Samba gained local fame.

Samba's paintings of the 1980's  show his perception of the social, political, economic and cultural realities of Zaïre (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), exposing all facets of everyday life in Kinshasa.  Samba's works offer a running commentary on popular customs, sexuality, AIDS and other illnesses, social inequalities, and corruption. In the documentary film Kin Kiesse, produced in 1982, Samba was the central figure.  His exhibition Les Magiciens de la Terre at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in 1989, was a breakthrough that made him known internationally.

Samba continues to produce his works.
