This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

The following information was submitted in August of 2006 by B. Taylor:

Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg (1740-1812)

De Loutherbourg was a landscape and history painter, and also a scene painter.  He came from Alsace and was trained by French painters, becoming a member of the Paris Academy in 1767.  He came to London to work with the actor David Garrick at the Drury Lane theatre, revolutionizing its stage scenery, and later became historical painter to the Duke of Gloucester.

His landscapes were very varied, and highly influential. His late landscapes tended towards scenes of violence in nature such as the Storm and Avalanche which he exhibited in 1804, effectively in competition with the young JMW Turner.

He was the father of  Annibale Christian Henry de Loutherbourg, who came to America in 1794, establishing himself as a miniature painter in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
