Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg (1740-1812)
De Loutherbourg was a landscape and history painter, and also a scene painter. He came from Alsace and was trained by French painters, becoming a member of the Paris Academy in 1767. He came to London to work with the actor David Garrick at the Drury Lane theatre, revolutionizing its stage scenery, and later became historical painter to the Duke of Glouce (showing 500 of 932 characters). |
