Biography from Auctionata:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Pavel Alexandrovich Svedomsky was born in St. Petersburg in 1849.  Svedomsky, the painter, was a descendant of a Russian noble family and studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in Munich with Eduard von Gebhardt and Mihály Munkácsy.  In 1875, he settled in Rome.

Svedomsky's favorite subjects were history paintings.  The famous painting of the 'Medusa' (1882) is today on display at the Moscow Tretyakov Gallery.  In Kiev, Svedomsky created paintings for the St. Vladimir Cathedral, depicting scenes from the life of Christ.  In his later work, the artist went on to represent Russian themes.  Svedomsky died in 1904.
