| Ingvardt Olsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on March 24, 1888. Olsen was trained as a technician at the Royal Danish Kilns in Copenhagen. By 1918 she was studying with Leon Volkmar at the Bedford Village Pottery in New York. There she met her lifelong companion, Manuel E. Jalanivich. The couple was in Panama for awhile before settling in San Francisco in 1922. During WWII she taught art and pottery to wounded veterans at Letterman Hospital in the Presidio.
