Jan Grove was born in Hamburg, in 1930. After learning the craft from his parents, Gerd and Lu Grove, he studied formally. He became a Certified Master of Art Pottery in 1956, and worked and designed for ceramics factories and studios in Germany. After operating his own studio for a while, he went to Turkey.
In Istanbul, Jan became a teacher and Head of the ceramic division of the School of Applied Fine Arts, Tatbiki Guzel Sanatlar Yuksek Okulu, from 1960-1965.
