Born in Slite, Sweden on Nov. 14, 1866, the son of a sea captain. Following in his father's footsteps, Hammarström sailed the seven seas before coming to San Francisco in 1885. While studying art at the Mark Hopkins Institute and privately with Gottardo Piazzoni, he worked as a conductor on the cable cars.
After the fire of 1906 demolished the city and his studio, he moved to a lot next to the Cliff House and lived in a tent until a suitable bungalow could be built. (showing 500 of 1151 characters). |
