| Joseph M. Cleary was born in San Jose, CA on July 22, 1871. While a resident of Oakland in the 1890s, Cleary studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. He then worked as a gardener and painted in his leisure. He died in San Francisco on Oct. 25, 1932.
