This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following information was provided by Joy Yates Wilson:

Ralph Boote was my great-great grandfather.  My grandmother (Jeanne Boote Yates) thinks he was born on Feb 16, 1880.  He was born in England and immigrated with his family before the age of 2 to America.  In his youth, someone from the Saturday Evening Post recognized his talent and suggested to his parents that he should study art in France.  This never happened as there were never the financial resources to accommodate.

He met his wife Hannah Selvis in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,  and they were married in 1898.  They moved to Orange, New Jersey, and he worked for many years as a life insurance agent there.   Some of his work around this time were sketches of the soldiers from the Spanish American War returning home.  These were done in pen and ink.

Ralph and Hannah had three children Ralph Emerson Boote, Sidney Boote (unknown middle name, but named for an uncle in Sidney, Australia), and Harry Wadsworth Boote.  Ralph loved literature and thus named two of his children in honor of some of his favorite authors.  He was blessed with 6 grandchildren (most of whom received some of his artwork):  Jeanne Boote Yates (to Ralph E. Boote) , Marion Boote Dourmont, and Beverly (to Sidney Boote), and Pam, Bobby, and Henry Boote (to Harry Wadsworth Boote).

Around 1929 or 1930, he and his wife moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey.  He became in employed as an artist by the government during the Depression.  His paintings were hung in public buildings in Atlantic City.  My grandmother specifically remembers one hanging in the public library.  He loved painting the ocean around Atlantic City and especially at a location called "Garden Basin" which is where Fishing boat at wharf was probably done.   He also enjoyed painting at the Meadowlands and bay areas around Atlantic City.

Towards the end of his life, he and his wife moved to Tidusville, Pennsylvania to be close to family.  This was was also a very productive time in his life painting the rural areas around Tidusville.  Scenes during this time included the Tidusville church, mainstreet, a local pond, farm lands, and woods.  He died of a stroke in 1957 at the age of 77.

Most of the paintings in the Yates family collection are landscapes.  He did both oil and watercolor.  Most of his paintings are scenes from New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  He sometimes made a second painting of the same scene.  There are two known paintings of Fishing boat at wharf and Uncle George's house.  He also did a few portraits throughout his life.  He was a very kind and thoughtful man with a beautiful sense of humor and a love of reading.
