Jordan Abeshouse   (1923 – 1989)

A well-known teacher and artist in the New Haven area, Jordan Abeshouse studied at the Yale School of the Fine Arts* and received his M.F.A. in 1951.  He taught in the public schools and became Supervisor of Art in the Wallingford school system and Head of the Art Department at Lyman Hall High School.  He was Professor of Art and Dean of Students at the Paier College of Art and also taught at Southern Connecticut State University.  He exhibited locally, and his work included commissioned portraits, landscapes, and religious subjects.  After his death, the Jordan Abeshouse Scholarships for students in Sheehan and Lyman Hall High Schools were established.

Jordan Abeshouse joined the New Haven Paint & Clay Club* in 1950 and exhibited in the juried shows and members exhibits, winning a Merit Award in 1987.  He was Club President from 1974 to 1976. A memorial show of his work was included in the 1989 Members Exhibit, and an award in his name is given at the Annual Greater New Haven High School Art Show.
