This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Kevin Brooks Eastman (b. 1962)

Kevin Eastman was born in Springvale, Maine on May 30, 1962.

In 1983, Eastman worked in a restaurant and was looking, for his comic stories, for underground publishers.  Eastman had collaborated with Peter Laird on various projects.  In May 1984, they self-published the first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) in black and white.

Laird had experience in newspapers and created a press kit that was sent to 180 TV and radio stations.  Their publicity caused a demand for the comic that had taken everyone by surprise with its strange name.  The second issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had advance copies totaling five times the initial print of they first issue.

Their fifth issue produced in November 1985, downsized to the more common comics-format and size, and the previous four issues were reprinted in this size and format with new, color covers.  Solson Publications released How To Draw Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 1985.  This was followed by the six issue Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Authorized Martial Arts Training Manual and one issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Teach Karate volume in 1987.

Eastman and Laird went their separate ways in 2002.  Laird purchased all of Eastman's ownership in TMNT.  Eastman married actress and model Julie Strain.  Discovering that magazine Heavy Metal was up for sale, Eastman decided  he wanted to purchase the magazine.  Eastman's wife was star in the animated film Heavy Metal 2000, based on Eastman's magazine property Heavy Metal and the graphic novel, The Melting Pot, written by Eastman, Simon Bisley and Eric Talbot, and the direct to video sequel to the 1981 feature film Heavy Metal.
