Leonard West was born on June 20, 1935 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to the late Amos West and Ruby DeBies and grew up in Los Angeles, California in the late 1940's. He became a Bohemian beatnik in the 1950's, lived seven years in Nara, Japan studying Zen Buddhism, proudly serving twenty years in his beloved United States Marine Corps in Korea and Viet Nam. While stateside during the 1960's, he was a passionate "servant to the people" in the Black Panther Party of Los Angeles-Stockwell.
