| | Painter. Born in San Diego, CA on Jan. 21, 1879. Better known in her day as a pianist, Gilbert was also a fine painter. She enrolled at the San Diego Academy of Fine Arts about 1927 and exhibited regularly through the 1940s. Active in local cultural affairs, she fought to save the 1915 Expo buildings in Balboa Park, was on the board of the Fine Arts Society, and hosted many famous performers at her home including Paviova and black singer Marian Anderson when she was refused a room at the U.S. Grant Hotel. Gilbert died in San Diego on Jan. 4, 1965. Exh: Artists Fiesta (LA), 1931; Calif. State Fair, 1937.
