This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Roma Burris Quartana, a lifelong prize-winning artist, died in Covington, LA on December 8, 2009 at the age of 91. A native of Long Island, New York, born in 1918, she drew notice for her innate artistic talent as a child, winning numerous awards through elementary school and high school in Poughkeepsie, NY.  She went on to study art at Syracuse University and the Grand Central School of Art in NYC, before serving in the American Red Cross during World War II. She was stationed in London during the blitz and narrowly escaped a direct hit by a buzz bomb.

She returned to the United States after World War II and was a commercial artist for DuPont and The Atlantic Oil Co.  In 1949, she married Joseph J. Quartana, an engineer with DuPont, and later settled in New Orleans in 1953. She continued her artistic career in New Orleans for over 50 years, gaining widespread acclaim for her work in multiple media with special recognition for her portrait painting.

She was active in numerous art organizations and served as President of the Louisiana Watercolor Society for several terms. She taught drawing and painting to aspiring young artists in her private studio for decades, and for over ten years she operated Pine Mountain Studio Arlington, VT, a summer artist residency program that featured prominent artists from around the country. The noted artist Milford Zornes conducted several art classes in her Vermont studio.

Roma Quartana was a signature member and past president of the Louisiana Watercolor Society (1973-1975 and 1979-1981).  In 2008 Roma Quartana was honored by the St. Tammany Art Association. She was a member of several watercolor societies, she taught art and she collaborated with noted artists, such as Zornes, in providing art workshops. She participated in many exhibits in Louisiana. There was a "Roma Quartana LWS Memorial Award" given at the LOUISIANA WATERCOLOR SOCIETY 40th Annual International Exhibition.
