This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Washington, DC on Jan. 16, 1902. Newman studied at the CGA, ASL in NYC, PAFA, and Critcher School of Painting & Commercial Art. In 1936 she settled in Los Angeles where she painted many portraits of movie stars Joan Crawford, Janet Gaynor, and others. She died there on Feb. 19, 1999. She was wife of theater-film director, Ruben Mamoulian. Member: Washington Art Club. Exh: Grand Central Gallery (NYC), 1936; Stendahl Gallery (LA), 1938.

Born in Washington, DC, Azadia Newman became known for her portrait painting. She studied at the Corcoran and Critcher Schools in Washington DC, the Art Students League in New York, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

She became a resident of North Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s.
