Donald A. Ray, who paints under the name Donray, was born in Houston, Texas. He grew up in East and South Texas. Donray began a career as a lawyer. He also studied painting while in law school.

Donray moved into an art career through a transforming Odyssey beginning in the colorful "Deep Ellum" section of Dallas, Texas, where he took a studio/ residence. After exhibiting in Dallas for several years he moved to New York in 1993, living and working in Brooklyn in the "Dumbo" area. ( Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Other Side, as it was known ). In 1995 Donray moved to Manhattan where he lived and worked for an additional four years. During that time he exhibited in New York, London, Washington D.C., and Houston, in both one man and group shows.

While in New York, Donray met artist Knox Martin, long time instructor at the Art Students League in New York. Donray and Martin became close friends, and Martin became Donray's mentor. Donray returned to Texas late in 1999. He continues to exhibit regularly in New York and London.

Donray's work has been described as expressionist with a strong surrealist resonance. Whatever the subject, his real focus is on motion. He has painted a variety of subjects, including rodeo performers, dancers, musicians, nudes, animals, and landscapes, each in swirling motion. Even buildings and furniture sway and undulate in his cityscapes and interiors. Colors are typically intense and composition is often vertiginous and/or skewed. Donray has had many influences including Eugene Delacroix, Chaim Soutine, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Umberto Boccioni, Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Burchfield, the Fauves and the German Expressionists.
