A portrait and landscape painter and teacher at the Utica Sketch Club in New York, Melville Ray did paintings of political figures including Vice President James S. Sherman and Governor Horatio Seymour. Portraits by him are in Utica at the Court House, Baggs Hotel, Munson-Williams Memorial, Mayor's
Office, Hotel Utica, Calvary Church, Church of the Holy Cross, Park
Baptist Church, and First and Second National Banks.
