Biography from Tweed Museum of Art:
| Walter S. Oschman
(American, dates unknown)
Painted 36 Mountie subjects between 1943-1960)
In contrast with the dramatic scenes of Arnold Friberg and many of the
other Mountie artists, Walter Oschman's illustrations are marked by
their lightness, lack of detail, and pastel hues. This is very likely
due to the fact that his mainstay was illustrating children's picture
books and school textbooks.
Two known books illustrated by Oschman include "Hello, David," a reader published by the Scott, Foresman Company in 1949, and "Ralph Waldo Emerson: Selected Essays," published by Peoples Book Club (Chicago) around the same time. Perhaps also due to his work with children's literature, many of Oschman's Mountie paintings feature domestic environments and children, as opposed to wilderness scenes. |
