|A wildlife painter living in Bemidji, Minnesota, Linda Walker does
realistic depictions of animals in landscape---deer, bison,
wolves. In order to get close to wolves, she worked on a
ranch in Montana where the owners left her in a five-acre enclosure
that a wolf inhabited.|
She was born in Ogden, Utah and as a child moved with her family to
Washington state and California. Her interest in painting began
in childhood, and continued through school which included earning a
science and art degree from San Diego State College, now San Diego
To earn money to attend college, she worked for Western Airlines as a
stewardess for several years and then extended that employment for a
total of 21 years. On a flight in 1970 from California to Mexico,
she met her future husband, Greg Walker, who became a stunt coordinator
in Hollywood. They married 18 months later in 1971.
During her years with the airline, she continued painting, ever having
in mind her love of the outdoors and the many times she rode horses and
hiked in the California Sierras. She also did volunteer work with
the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound in Rosamond, California.
In 1990, she and Greg moved to Minnesota where she focused on her
painting career. However, she was sidelined for two years by
treatments for breast cancer. As public service, she
donated paintings to victims of Hurricane Katrina of any subject
of their choice, which included the image of a family's pet bull name
"Rock and Roll". Because her husband had been a bull rider, she
had many photos from which to work.
A very happy part of Linda Walker's life occurred in June, 2005, when
she was reunited with a daughter she had put up for infant adoption in
1961 and the daughter's children and grandchildren. Of receiving
the phone call that made the connection, Walker said: "I cried. I
cried froma depth I never knew I had."
