Carol Lorraine Sutton was born on September 3, 1945 in Norfolk, Virginia, a seaside port.

Her parents inspired her career as her mother, Nancy Chester Sustare Sutton, was an artist, and her father, Robert William Sutton, was a designer of marine products and president of The Sutton Manufacturing Corporation, Norfolk, Virginia.

Ms. Sutton's spent her early childhood years at Chesapeake Beach on the oceanfront, where her family owned a cabin high up on a sand dune overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. She remembers mainly playing outside building sand castles, swimming in the ocean and climbing in scrub brush oak trees overlooking the sea; and beginning to draw and crayon about age four on white cardboard that came into the house from her fathers laundered shirts.

As a teenager she made oil sketch landscapes in the garden grounds of the Hermitage Foundation near her Lochaven home. Touring inside of the Hermitage house owned by William and Florence Sloane, may have been where she first saw the work of Carl Faberge. Mrs. Torkelson or Miss Hatzopolous were her art teachers in 1959 at Northside Junior High School. While a senior student at Granby High School, Sutton art teacher was Mrs. Sylvia Delzell, who also gave Sutton Saturday morning private drawing lessons from her studio home. This time was also when she entered this art contest and won her first award, 1963 Blue Ribbon / First Place in Junior Section / 'Sears-Allstate Tidewater Arts Festival' / for collage 'Pensive Youth'. The image was of a girl looking out of a paned window.

Today Sutton continues to draw, and paint on paper and makes many collages in which she avoids overlapping images, hoping to stand clear of cubism, as Picasso and Braque pioneered it at the birth of collage.

She enrolled in Richmond Professional Institute, now Virginia Commonwealth University, as a full-time student of art, and her courses included design, painting, drawing, art history, photography, print making, typography. In her second year of art college, in 1965, she married at age nineteen fellow art student, Dennis Stillwell Martin. They lived at the corner of Plum Street and Floyd Avenue, in the Fan District, next door to Dejanne Lemmon, a Canadian from Toronto, Ontario. Friendship with Dejanne is why the couple later move up to Toronto. Sutton received two Virginia Museum Fellowship Grants in 1966 and 1967, and taught Saturday morning art lessons there in exchange.

Sutton's teachers at The Richmond Professional Institute or RPI, now VCU were Jewett Campbell for painting and design, James Bumgardner for painting and drawing, Richard Carylon for art history and design, Willard Pilchard for photography, printmaking and typography, Jonathan Bowie for architecture and design, George Nan for photography, 'Art', Jack Beal, a well known realist painter, for graphic design. Both Campbell and Bumgardner had studied under Hans Hoffman.

Sutton gained her Bachelor of Fine Arts, or B.F.A. Degree in 1967 and received The Gold Key Award upon her graduation. This group of educators had a profound lasting effect on her approach to art and its making. They were on to everything happening. Once in 1965 they once took a group of students in a small van and drove up to Washington, D.C. to see a show of Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis, because they had "heard about two guys up in D.C. doing stripe paintings that looked like awnings". This trip caused her artwork to move towards a style with bold simple oval and frog shapes, and use livelier colors; that later became the images of her serigraph portfolio.

Sutton moved to Greensboro, North Carolina in 1967 to attend the University of North Carolina where her professors were Will Insley, Walter "Wally" Barker, Gilbert Carpenter, and Stephen Antonakos. When she was twenty-two, her work entered the Jacob Kainen Collection, curator of prints and drawings for the Smithsonian, in Washington, D.C. with a boxed portfolio of 16 serigraphs titled 'The Artist As A Young Woman - Picabia'. S

Sutton received a Master of Fine Arts Degree in 1969 and the Chancellor's Purchase Award for her sculpture from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She taught at the UNCG for three years and both painted and made sculpture at this time. She continues to love looking and being in the presence of sculpture.

In 1970, she moved from Greensboro, North Carolina to Toronto, Ontario, Canada {an inland port}. Shortly after arriving in Toronto she met new music composers, including David Jaeger, James Montgomery and Larry Lake; made moving stage sculpture and light work for computer synthesized sound for The Canadian Electronic Ensemble and makes a stage sculpture for a The University of Toronto performance in 1973. Around 1974 Sutton stopped making sculpture and focused on only painting.

Sutton separated from Dennis Stillwell Martin and later divorced resuming her maiden name. Three years later she met her future husband, Andre Fauteux, a Toronto sculptor. They married in 1977 and had two children.

She met some major artists and critics who have had great influence on her work. These include artists, Sir Anthony Caro, Kenneth Noland, Larry Poons, and Helen Frankenthaler, whom she met in 1974. Tony Caro in particular gave her some wonderful advice, inspired her artwork, and served as a role model on how to be a generous person towards other artists by his own example. Caro often purchased younger artists work and co founded the Triangle Artist Workshops. The same year she met critic Clement Greenberg, who continued to visit her studio annually over a sixteen-year period, as he made trips to Toronto to see the art of Jack Bush. Greenberg's last visit to Carol's studio was to see THE SPIRIT BALCONY PAINTING SERIES in 1990.

Art critic Karen Wilkin became a friend and often makes studio visits, and has written a number of articles on Carol's artwork. Art critic Kenworth Moffett, included her work in a group show in New York City and as main curator for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, purchased one of Sutton's 'Fan Series' paintings, 'ALVERTIE', named after her Great Grandmother, Alvertie Queen Sutton. In 1983 Carol meets critic Michael Fried at Triangle Artists Workshops, in Pine Plains, New York.

Sutton is mainly known for her large scale abstract acrylic paintings that include THE FAN SERIES. She began using acrylic paint in 1966; Aquatec, Liquitex, and Utrecht brands, but switched to Golden Artists Colors around 1980, which she still uses today, particularly the high-load colors, the liquids and the full bodied colors. Sutton helped test these new colors in her studio in Toronto and was among the first in Canada to use these new paints by Sam Golden.

She paints with her canvas on the floor, as did Pollack and Frankenthaler.  She taught a course at Queens University, Kingston, Ontario, in how to paint with acrylics in 1978.

Her works are included in some major collections including Agnes Etherington Art Centre, in Kingston, Ontario, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, in Massachusetts, Edmonton Art Gallery, Alberta, the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, The Fitzwilliam Museum of Cambridge, United Kingdom, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, Spain.

She has attended four professional workshops; Emma Lake, Saskatchewan (1977), then two Triangle Artists Workshops, in Pine Plains, New York (1983 & 1986), and was one of forty international guest artists invited who attended Art Triangle Barcelona 1987, Barcelona, Spain. Sutton has formed many lasting friendships with other artists attending these workshops and has specially close ties to London artists Sheila Girling, Gina Medcalf, Mali Morris, Colette Morey de Morand, Richard Rome, Tim Scott, Cheron Tompkins.

Overseas travel has a great effect on her paintings. In 1989, she received a major Canada Council Senior Art Grant, travels to Europe and photographs 43 rolls of film of ironwork motifs in Spain and France and this results in 'SILHOUETTE-GRILL-BALCONY' show of 1989 at Gallery One in Toronto, Ontario. Some photographs were urban subjects, others were of Gaudi's work. She has produced a major group of paintings titled ' THE SPECIFIC HISTORICALLY BASED WORKS'

In 1989 Ms. Sutton began what she feels is her most focused, compelling and original group of works to date; these are titled 'THE SPIRIT BALCONY PAINTINGS'; These works have both the 20th Century Jungian - "All at Once" take-it-in-ability and yet also have a 19th Century concern for detail, as if in an Eakins paintings; both concerns are married together in a new way. Sutton was looking primarily at Manet. You can see black arabesques drawing in balconies, but the whole picture reads as if it is abstract in feeling. These works are mainly ontologically based. Clement Greenberg upon seeing these balcony paintings in a studio visit made in 1990, loves them and says, " I believe these for the first time successfully puts drawing in abstract painting." "You are able to draw right across the middle." And, "Man can you draw."

Carol Sutton also does photography, mainly in black and white. She has a strong interest in color and wants her art to be original. Ms. Sutton wants her art to feel ontological and spiritual, while remaining abstract. Her large aims are to be a recognized international artist of historic importance.
