This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following biography, submitted May 2004, is from James Cox who wrote:

"From a gallery, I purchased paintings by Anatomy/Anatole Sokoloff.  At the time of my purchase, the dealer informed me he purchased the paintings from the heirs of the artist, and provided me with a biography given him by the heirs.  The biogrophy states as follows:

"ANATOLIO SOKOLOFF: The Artist, Anatole Sokoloff was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in July, 1891 and died in San Francisco, Calif. (a citizen of the United States) in May, 1971. He completed the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg having studied under Kardovsky, Kootstodiev and Sabonov.  His works were exhibited in various cities of Russia. He became the Commissioner of Fine Arts in the Crimea, and later Academic Professor of Art.

In Europe, his works are to be found in museums and private galleries of Germany, Romania, and Austria.  Among the renowned are the portraits of Fieldmarshal Von Kliest; Graf Von Arnim; the Baroness of Poleologu; and her Royal Highness, the Princess of Lichtenstein.

In South America, in 1950, his painting, The Pass of the Andes was awarded the Gold Medal and the Diplomat of Merit, and was then acquired by the Argentine government for their National Museum of San Martin.  In 1953, the government of Argentina commissioned the artist for the painting, The Great Captain for their House of Congress.  In 1961, again commissioned by the government, he completed the work, Crossing of the Parana River.

His panoramic murals, Christopher Columbus the Discoverer of America; The Conquistadores; and Argentina Today are to be found in the Rivadavias Gallery in Buenos Aires.

In the United States, he was appointed President of the American Russian Artists Society, which he held up until his recent death.  His works are to be found in the Jamison and the Maxwell galleries; however a full exhibit was never arranged as he was working on a series of historical events from American history up until his unexpected death."
