| Born in England, Charles Hall settled in Los Angeles, having arrived there via Canada in 1910. In England he had studied at the Norwich School of Art, and in California, he became a watercolor painter of landscapes and seascapes in his leisure time.
His primary profession was with the movie industry. In the 1920s, he started his career as an art director for Hollywood studios, and his first assignment was "All Quiet on the Western Front". Other assignments included work with Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin and Carol Lombard.
Hall lived in a home he purchased from movie actor John Wayne.
