Stephen Yadzinski was born in Buffalo, New York in 1974. He is the son of professional classical musicians, his mother a violinist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and his father a clarinetist with the Buffalo Philharmonic. Throughout his childhood Yadzinski had a strong interest in both music and the visual arts. At age 15, Yadzinski began taking photographs after signing up for a photography class, and six months later had built his first darkroom.
In the fall of 1992 Yadzinski enrolled in the Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.). The classes at R.I.T. added to his understanding of photography's many forms. Working his way through school, Yadzinski was hired by a number of well-known photographers in the Rochester area.
Shortly after graduating from R.I.T. in 1996, Yadzinski began working for Megargee Vanderlinde Labs (M.V. Labs) in New York City, known for gelatin silver printmaking. It was there that he first began to combine his expert technical knowledge with photographic creative expression, printing for such well-known artists as Annie Leibovitz, Antonin Kratochvil, and Steven Klein. More importantly for Yadzinski, though, was the visual maturity he gained from working at M.V. Labs. While there he pushed his technical knowledge further, becoming a master printer and refining printing techniques he would use in his later work.
In 1998, internationally recognized commercial photographer Jamey Stillings recruited Yadzinski. Working with Stillings, Yadzinski moved into the commercial world, making photographs for national print advertising campaigns whose clients included Boeing, Epson, and Lincoln Financial Group. He and Stillings traveled around the world to locations in Hong Kong, Sao Paulo, Vanuatu, Fiji, the Philippines and the Bahamas, as well as throughout Europe and the United States.
Yadzinski left Stillings in 2001 to focus on his art full time. Today, he works in a self-built studio in an industrial space, where all of his current work is conceived and executed.
Yadzinski makes his home today in Santa Fe, NM, where he lives with his wife, Susanna Space, a writer.
