Ben Long studied Creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and painting at the Art Students League in New York where he studied with Robert Beverly Hale and Frank Mason. He left the Art students League to enlist with the Marines. He served two tours of Duty in Vietnam as a Marine Combat Officer and later with the Combat Art Team. His work from this period is in the Smithsonian.
