This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following, submitted June 2005, is from the artist whose home studios are in Beaverton, Oregon or from his Mountain studio in southeast Oregon near Lakeview.

For thirty years, James Johnston has been conducting a study of atmosphere and light. His sculptures, Ink drawings, and paintings all attempt to bring the emotional effect of light and atmosphere to landscapes and figures. Working in Bronze, Acrylic, Oils, Pastels and Ink, he has filled private collections in seven countries.

James Johnston was born amid the ranches of South Eastern Oregon. He chose a career in art at the age of five. The High Desert was his back yard and the buckaroos who lived there were his playmates and best friends. As a teenager he studied art under Antoinette Radford. Johnston went to Los Angeles to study art in 1971 at Los Angeles Art Center. In 1974 he became a student of, and was mentored by, George McMahn, SWA. In the mid 1980's he met and was assisted in the business of art by George E. Lee the maritime artist.

James Johnston had his first professional show in 1974, in Oregon. His first newspaper review and article was in the 1982 "Hillsboro Argus" (Oregon). His first solo show was in 1983 in Oregon. He was an charter member of American Artists International in 1985, and his first International show was in 1985 in Japan. (AAI show) He has been a regular participant at the West Coast "Art Gone Wild" shows.
He is an annual participant of the Lake Oswego Festival of Arts in Oregon, a show that sees 100,000 patrons in 3 days. He also contributes regularly to "Ducks Unlimited" fundraisers and many local and regional charity events. He opens his studio twice a year for in-studio shows (April and October).

"I see myself as a regional artist who has been luck enough to have patrons in seven countries and most of the United States."
