This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Csokonya, Hungary on Oct. 5, 1825. While a law student, Xántus became involved in the ill-fated Rebellion of 1848. After decamping to the U.S. in 1851, he became a topographer with the Pacific Railroad Survey in 1852. During 1855-57 he served with the U.S. Coast Survey and was stationed at Fort Tejon and Cape St Lucas. While in California, he contributed greatly to the study of western birds which resulted in several new species being named for him. He published and illustrated two books based upon his experiences in the U.S. entitled Levelei Ejszakamerikából and Utazás Kalifornia déli Részeiben. He was U.S. Consul at Manzanillo, Mexico from 1861 until his return to Hungary in 1864. Upon returning to his native land, Xántus worked for the National Museum in Budapest as keeper of the Ethnographical Division until his death on Dec. 13, 1894.
