Tomas de Suria was born in Spain in 1761. Suría studied art with Jeronimo Antonio Gil at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. In 1788 he moved to Mexico City where he worked as an engraver and two years later joined the Malaspina round-the-world expedition as official artist. The expedition visited California in September 1791. While there, he did at least 19 drawings, ink washes, and watercolors of colonists, Indians, the flora and fauna, and the earliest known depictions of the Monterey Presidio and Carmel Mission.
