Born in Levinworth Manor, Upperville, Virginia, he became a painter of large-scale scenes of the Grand Canyon and also painted in Europe and the Holy Land.
He entered the Confederate Army at age 17. After the war, he became a student of Thomas Moran in Philadelphia and enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. He also studied in New York City, Rome, Paris, and London. He returned to Europe in 1890 and earned a reputation for Venetian scenes.
