The following biography is based on information provided to by Paul E. Truesdell, Jr., a distant cousin of the artist, whose source is a family genealogy:

Gaylord Sangston TRUESDELL was born on January 1, 1850 in Waukegan, Illinois and died June 13, 1899, in New York City. Unmarried, he was a celebrated painter and artist who began as an engraver. He studied in the Pennsylvania Academy and, in 1885, went to France where he worked under Ernest Meissonier and Fernand Cormon.
