Portrait and genre painter Walter Gould was born in 1829 in Philadelphia, where he studied with the famous portrait painter Thomas Sully, and with John Rubens Smith. Gould was a talented youth. He exhibited at the Philadelphia Artists' Fund Society when he was barely in his teens. He also later studied in Paris.

When he moved to Italy in 1849 as a young man, age twenty, Gould could not have known that he would live there for the rest of his life, dying forty-four years later in Florence i (showing 500 of 1927 characters).
