Henry Webster Rice was born in Pownal, Maine in 1853. He was a pupil of Ross Turner and worked in both oils and watercolors, painting genre scenes and landscapes. However, the majority of his work is marine views of boats and fishermen.
From 1906 to 1934, Rice painted at Fenwick Studios. He took painting trips to Bermuda from 1913 until his death in Watertown, Massachusetts in 1934. Rice exhibited at the Boston Art Club from 1888 to 1907 and also at the Art Institute of Chicago.
