This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in San Francisco, CA on Oct. 10, 1855. Wilson first studied painting with his mother, Agnes (California's earliest known woman artist) and later with Jules Tavernier. He lived in his native city until 1900 when he moved north to Eureka. Sketching trips were made to Mexico, Central America and the west coast of South America; however, it is his paintings of the California redwoods which brought him renown. He had a ready market in the East where his works were reproduced by calendar makers with thousands being sold all over the U.S. Many of his paintings were lost in the 1906 earthquake. He produced a set of large paintings for Humboldt County's exhibit at the PPIE. The year before he died, Wilson went to NYC to visit relatives and exhibit his paintings of the giant redwoods. While there, he fell ill and died on Jan. 3, 1920. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1884-89; SFAA, 1885; Calif. State Fair, 1888-89. In: Eureka Court House; Clarke Museum (Eureka).
