Unveiled: a directory and guide to 19th century born artists active in Rhode Island, and where to find their work in publicly accessible Rhode Island collections
by Elinor L. Nacheman

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Sidney Richmond Burleigh (1853-1931) was born in the coastal town of Little Compton, Rhode Island.  After studying in Paris, he returned to Rhode Island and became a prolific painter.  He was a founder of the Providence Art Club (1880-1929) and served as the first president of the Providence Watercolor Club (1896). Although he also worked in oils, he is best known for his outstanding work in watercolor, which he taught at Rhode Island School of Design from 1897-1906.

He exhibited during the late 19th- and early 20th century at the Boston Art Club as well as the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Newport Art Museum.  In 1885 he built the "Fleur de Lys" arts & crafts building on Thomas Street to be used as studios for artists.

Biography from Roger King Fine Art, A - G:
Painter, illustrator, craftsman, and architect, Sydney Burleigh was a colorful and prominent figure in Rhode Island art circles.  He was born in Little Compton, which he frequently painted, and spent much of his career in Providence.  He was a craftsman for the Providence manufacturing company Browne and Sharpe from 1873 until 1876, when he established his own studio.

Around 1878 he traveled to Europe, studying painting in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens and traveling throughout the continent and working briefly in Italy.  Burleigh returned to Providence in 1880, becoming involved with the newly-established Providence Art Club and Rhode Island School of Design, where he became a member of the Board of Directors and a teacher of watercolor painting.  In 1885 he built the flamboyant Fleur-de-Lys studio on Thomas Street on the slope of Providence's historic College Hill.  The medieval-inspired, half-timbered-and-stucco building with exuberant bas-relief panels executed by Burleigh was the first structure created expressly for artists' studios, a revolutionary concept in its day.  Based on structures he had seen in Chester, England, it is today recognized as an architectural landmark of the Arts and Crafts movement in America.
