| Born in Germany, he and his family came to America in 1843. They settled in St. Louis where he spent considerable time with the Indians who camped near this western gateway. In 1852, he returned to Germany, studying four years at the Dusseldorf Academy. He learned careful draftsmanship and fastidious execution and applied this to his interest in the exploits of the American Indian. He made several lengthy trips up the Missouri River to sketch and collect artifacts. He received lucrative commissi (showing 500 of 2878 characters). |
