| Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Griffith Coale was a painter who studied art in Munich, Paris, Italy and Spain. Returning to the United States, he studied with Leon Kroll and John Sloan. He earned a widespread reputation for mural work as well as painting, and in August 1941, was commissioned into the US Naval Reserve as Lieutenant Commander and became part of the Combat Artist Program. He was the Navy's first combat artist on active duty and spent six and one-half years in the Navy. He witnessed a (showing 500 of 1562 characters). |
