Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Landscape painter, etcher, illustrator. Born in Barton, WI on Feb. 3, 1859. Nichols studied at ASL in NYC and with Heckel in Munich (1886). From 1894 he appears to have divided his time between Brooklyn, NY and southern California. The art community in Los Angeles was in its infancy when he arrived there in 1894. His first job was teaching at the Echo Mountain Summer School. He led a peripatetic existence in search of subject matter as an illustrator for Harper's and Century magazines. He also illustrated the books, French and English Furniture and Loves of Great Poets. Nichols lived in San Juan Capistrano from 1932 until his demise in Laguna Beach on Oct. 9, 1939. Member: Salmagundi Club; Laguna Beach AA; NY WC Society. Exh: LA Chamber of Commerce, 1894. Land of Sunshine, Nov. 1894; AAA 1898-1933; CA&A; WWAA 1936-41; SCA; Fld; AAW; South Coast News, 10-10-1939 (obit).
