This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Krk, Croatia, Zivko Zic fled his country during the Communist invasion. He settled in Rome, Italy, where he simultaneously enrolled at the Scuola di Medicina, the Universita di Roma, and La Accademia di Belle Arti. In 1947, following three years of studies in Italy, he moved to Buenos Aires where he lived until 1962 and actively pursued his painting career.
In 1962, he emigrated to the United States and lived in Chicago until 1989, and then moved to Tucson, Arizona, which he had discovered much earlier on his extensive plein-aire painting trips throughout the Southwest.
In painting landscapes, he frequently returned to the same site several times at the same hour of the day in an effort to capture the color and quality of a moment.
His work is in three municipal museums in Argentina---Arecifes, Panama, and Bahia Blanca as well as the University of Arizona Museum of Art in Tucson. In 1990, Mitchell, Brown Fine Art of Tucson had a one-man exhibition for Zic, the first exhibition for a living artist that the gallery had ever done.

Zivko Zic (Yugoslavian, born 1924)
Zivko Zic is a native of Croatia. Fleeing the country during the Communist invasion, Zic settled in Rome where he simultaneously enrolled at the Scuola di Medicina and La Accademia di Belle Arte. After three years of studies, in 1947, Zic moved to Argentina and painted prolifically. He had his fist solo exhibition in Buenos Aries, in 1955.
A Chicago based artist since his immigration to the United States in 1961, Zivko Zic has traveled extensively throughout America. Like the 19th Century Barbizon painters, Zic is concerned with the overall mood of scenes in nature and capturing the poetry in a subject. Zivko Zic is drawn to his subject's dramatic beauty and the harmonious relationship in their surroundings.
Paintings by Zivko Zic are contemporary representational works of art. Sympathetic to 19th and early 20th century European plein-air painting and American plein-air painting of the 20th century, Zic paints with wet thick oil paint. Often referred to as lyrical expressions, his paintings are color notes of rapidly changing light and shadow. He often returns to the same location two or three times at the same hour of the day in an effort to capture the color and quality of a moment.
