Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Cartoonist. Born in San Francisco, CA on April 29, 1877. "Tad Dorgan showed great talent as an artist while at Polytechnic High School. His teacher at that school was Maria Van Vieck. A childhood accident removed three fingers on his right hand and his hopes for becoming a boxer. For manual therapy, he took up line illustration which soon led him to becoming one of the most widely read, left-handed newspaper artists in the U.S. He began his career with the San Francisco Bulletin at age 14 and in 1903 went to work for Hearst papers in New York where he gained fame for his sports cartoons. Dorgan died at Great Neck, Long Island, NY on May 2, 1929. On the day of his death all flags in San Francisco flew at half-mast. Exh: SF Newspaper Artists, 1903. SF Chronicle and NY Times, 5-3-1929 (obits); SF Examiner, 3-2-1987 & 7-22-1996.
