Born in Woodhall, New York, he was a painter of landscapes, portraits, and numerous Indian subjects with few surviving works.

His style was grand in the mid-19th century manner of landscape painters Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt with emphasis on the majesty of human nature and the untamed nature of the landscape.

Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Illustrator, painter. Born in Woodhull, NY in 1867.

Marlatt was based in New York throughout his career but made painting trips to the West as early as 1887. While in southern California in 1916, he painted a view of the Santa Barbara Mission and other local scenery. His illustrations often appeared on the covers of Literary Digest.

He died in Mount Vernon, NY on Oct. 10, 1929. His work included landscapes, portraits, Indians and western genre.
