Born 1808 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Died in Louisville, Kentucky 1853.
Married to Mary Ann Hewlett of Bolton, Connecticut on 1-30-1830 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Though he spent a good deal of time in Cincinnati, Ohio he and his wife traveled around the Southern states painting portraits, especially miniatures. Records indicate children born in Montgomery Alabama, St. Joseph, Florida, Frankfort, Kentucky. All of these births are entered in the family bible.
James is listed in the Cincinnati Arts Council as a miniature artist of note. He is also listed in the New York Historical Society of Artists.
