This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Bruno Ertz was a self-taught artist known primarily for his depictions of birds and insects. Many of his works were small scale. He was first in the city directory of Milwaukee in 1891 at age 18, and he shared a studio with Frank Bresler who was also from Manitowoc. From 1896 to 1898, he was in Detroit and worked as a portrait artist with Percy Cuthberg Nash, and then went back to Milwaukee until 1918 when he began a residency in his hometown that lasted through the 1920s.

Returning to Milwaukee, he worked at the Milwaukee Public Museum as a Federal Art Project artist during the Depression and then joined the museum staff. He lived in Elgin, Illinois the last eight years of his life from 1948 to 1956.

His work is in the collection of the Charles Allis Art Museum in Milwaukee, and retrospective exhibitions have been held in 1962 and 1977 in Manitowoc.
