Born in Thorn an der Weichsel, Prussia, which became Torun, Poland, Otto Von Ernst was a painter especially known for hunting scenes and was an art teacher. He worked intermittently in Milwaukee, Wisconsin between 1881 and 1891. At age seventeen, he was a student at the Dusseldorf Academy and stayed in that program until 1876. An influential teacher for him there was historical painter Albert Baur (1835-1906). In 1880, a Dusseldorf exhibition had a hunting-scene painting by Von Ernst.
