Long-lived painter and sculptor Nelson Norris Bickford was born in 1846, dying in 1943. He exhibited at the Armory Show in New York City in 1913. Bickford studied with Henri Lehmann at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and at the Academie Julian. From 1905-1931, Bickford was a guard in the sculpture galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City, where his interest was piqued, and he evolved into a sculptor of animals.
