Founder of the American Banknote Company, George Hatch spent his career in New York state as an engraver. He was born in Johnstown and by the mid 1820s was studying with Asher B. Durand. In 1827, Hatch was elected with many others to the National Academy of Design in the classification of Artist, but the next year with revision of all in that classification to Associate, he took that title. By this time he had moved to Albany.
