| The following, submitted September 2004, is from Rob Rathbun, Family Historian
of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Augusta Rathbone was born November 13, 1897 in San Francisco, California and died in Palo Alto March 19, 1990. She was the daughter of Harry Bowen Rathbone and his wife, Julia Payne Briggs. Augusta is descended from the Rathbun Rathbone Rathburn Family of Block Island, Rhode Island.
Augusta was a maverick printmaker who worked during the Golden Age of Printmaking. She was educated at the University of California at Berkeley in the fine arts. In the late 1920's and early 1930's she finished her Marin and San Francisco Series and the Lake Tahoe-Sierra Nevada Series.
In the mid 1930's she visited in France and studied at Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and with Claudio Castelucho and Lucien Simon. Early in the 1940's she returned home and was the first woman to be given a solo show at the San Francisco Museum of Art. Her work was eventually added to the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum. Late in life she worked in the dormitories of Mills College.

| Born in Berkeley, CA on Dec. 30, 1897, Augusta Rathbone studied at the
San Francisco Institute of Art in 1912-13. Following graduation
from UC Berkeley, she continued in Paris at Académie de la
Grande-Chaumière and with Claudio Castelucho and Lucien Simon.
While based in San Francisco, she made many trips to New York and
Paris. She remained in San Francisco until shortly before her
demise in Palo Alto, CA on March 19, 1990.
Her work includes etchings, color aquatints, and oils of the French Riviera, the Sierra Nevada, and Canada.

| Augusta Rathbone (1897-1990) painter, and printmaker, was born in
Berkeley, California. In 1921, upon graduating from the
University of California at Berkeley, she left for Paris to continue
her studies at the Academie de la Grande Chaumière. She was introduced
to printmaking in 1927, and, thereafter, worked primarily in color
aquatint combined with line etching. During the late 1920s and
early 1930s her plates were printed professionally in the shop of
Monsieur Procabeuf in Paris.
After World War II, Rathbone returned to Paris to discover that the
shop of her printer had been sold and it was under the new ownership of
Monsieur Leblanc. Due to the expense of professional printing and
the difficulties she encountered with Monsieur Leblanc, she eventually
taught herself to print.
Rathbone's work has been included in the Spring and Autumn Salons in
Paris and exhibitions at the Musee National D'Art Moderne, the Brooklyn
Museum, the California Society of Etchers, the California State
Library, the de Young Memorial Museum and the Oakland Museum.
Her artistic affiliations included memberships in the California
Society of Etchers, the San Francisco Women Artists and the National
Arts Club. Her work is represented in numerous private and public
collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, the California Society of
Etchers, the de Young Memorial Museum and Rutgers University. |
