New York Armory Show of 1913
This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Clifton, Canada near Niagara Falls, Cecil Howard moved to Buffalo, New York at age two. At age 13, he started clay modeling at the Art Students League with James E. Fraser. Then he went to Paris for thirty-five years where he studied at the Academie Julian and his sculpture was shown at the Salon. He supported himself with fashion drawing and by teaching the Argentine tango.

During World War II, Howard drove a Red Cross truck carrying food and medicine to German prison camps. In 1943, he was recruited by the OSS to do secret work in Washington and London. In 1944, for a "chaste stone nude," he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.

He exhibited in the famous Armory Show of 1913 in New York City, which introduced modern art to America. Howard was elected to the National Academy of Design, New York City; an Associate in 1944, an Academician in 1948.
