This biography from the Archives of AskART:
George Gale is recognized as one of Rhode Islands most accomplished nautical painters. He was born in Bristol near the turn of the century, but he soon made his way to the United States on a freighter bound for New York. He kept a journal of his voyage complete with pencil sketches.

He took a position as a mate on a commercial schooner in New Bedford during the 1920s. He worked in the whaling industry and soon earned a reputation as a master boat-builder, rigger and sailor. He was known to have painted in the area of Barrington, Rhode Island in the 1930s before pursuing formal art training at the Rhode Island School of Design. His knowledge of boats and the whaling industry is apparent in his nautical paintings and etchings that can be found in the New Bedford and Nantucket Whaling Museums.
