| John R. Johnston was a painter and sculptor of portrait, landscape, and historical subjects. He was born in Ohio and lived in Cincinnati from as early as 1842 until as late as 1853. He assisted Henry Lewis with his Mississipppi panorama in 1848-49.
By 1857 he had moved to Baltimore and became one of the leading portraitists there, active until 1872.
